Perenjori is a small town located in Western Australia, around 360 kilometres north of Perth. The town, which has a population of just over 200 people, was originally established as a railway town in the early 1900s. Today, it is known for its rich agricultural history and as a popular stopover for travellers exploring the region.

Early History

Prior to European settlement, the area around Perenjori was inhabited by the Nanda people. They were renowned for their skills in hunting and gathering, particularly of the native yam, known as the Mootich. The Nanda people used the area as a seasonal camp, moving between the coast and inland areas.

European Settlement

European settlement of Perenjori began in the late 1800s, when pastoralists began to move into the area. In 1876, the government established a police station in the area, as well as a telegraph station. The town was officially gazetted in 1914, and a railway line was built connecting the town to the nearby coast.

Agriculture

The fertile soils and temperate climate of the region around Perenjori made it ideal for agriculture. Wheat, oats and barley were the primary crops grown by early settlers, and by the 1930s, the town had established itself as a major wheat growing region. Today, local farmers produce a variety of crops, including canola, lupins and wheat.

Recent History

In more recent times, Perenjori has become popular with tourists and travellers exploring Western Australia. The town offers a range of accommodation options, including camping and caravan facilities, as well as a hotel and motel. Attractions in the area include the nearby Merredin Peak, the Perenjori Museum and the historic Wheatlands Homestead.
